Highway Watch® Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Interstate Highway System

On June 29th, 1956 President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed federal legislation to initiate one of the largest engineering projects ever undertaken: the US Interstate Highway System. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this momentous occasion, a national convoy will retrace, in reverse, the route of the 1919 First Transcontinental Motor Train, an arduous journey of 3,250 miles from Washington, D.C. to San Francisco which included then Lieutenant Colonel Dwight David Eisenhower. Highway Watch® has partnered with DaimlerChrysler to create a special Highway Watch® tractor trailer that will travel the route as a part of the celebration convoy. We invite Americans all across the country to join us at each of the convoy's 18 stops, from San Francisco on June 16th to Washington DC on June 29th. The terrible tragedy of 9/11 taught us several lessons. There are people who want to destroy our landmarks, undermine our economy, disrupt our government, and harm our loved ones. These individuals will stop at nothing to ensure we can’t take care of our responsibilities and they are, unfortunately, here in our own county.

American Truckers - on the front lines

Truckers are on the "front lines" in the War on Terror in the US.  It is very important that we are alert and that we report any suspicious activity to the local authorities and the FBI.

Pay particular attention to the following characteristic types of suspicious activities:

1.  Persons apparently following trucks on the highway for extended periods of time, especially those trucks transporting hazardous materials.

2.  Persons photographing trucks and facilities from cars or public access areas

3.  Persons asking questions about routes, origins, destinations, cargo, vehicle capacities and the like

4.  Trucking operations involving the movement of air cargo and hazardous materials are asked to pay particular attention to suspicious activities in and around airports, production, processing and distribution facilities.

As we have seen in the recent e-coli outbreaks, it only takes one contaminated case of produce to sicken or kill many people, with the orgins difficult to trace.  It is important to seal your trailer after loading (in the case of multiple stops, sealing the trailer after each stop).  A lock, such as a padlock or Enforcer lock, gives added protection.

It is easy for a bio-terrorist to contaminate your freight if you do not have it locked!

Ensure king pin locks are in place on all dropped trailers to prevent theft.

Avoid parking in poorly lit areas, especially if hauling HazMat.  If hauling HazMat, it is suggested that you park as close to the front of the parking area as legally possible. 

Always keep your cell phone handy.

When outside your truck, carry a self defense device -- pepper spray, legal firearm, etc.)  Information on firearms laws throughout the US can be found at the National Rifle Association website, www.nra.org

Most importantly, be very aware of your surroundings at the shipper, receiver, truck stops and highways. 

Additional information

Remember, not all terrorists fit the profile of a young, Middle Eastern man.  While that is the typical profile, a domestic terrorist can also have blond hair and blue eyes, and be male or female, young or old.
